The "Less" Beautiful People

With Nate working later hours lately, I've been watching a bit of television.

OK, so I nap through it for a couple of hours, and often wake up during "The Doctors" or "M*A*S*H" or "The People's Court." This can be really disorienting.

Anyway. In watching various shows, I've found that I like shows better--or at least that I find myself scoffing less when the people who are on them are the less-perfect looking people. Not that I want to watch a show full of really ugly and unfortunate looking people, but when people just look normal, it's easier to watch them for me.

For example, I'm currently watching "Lie to Me." This guy is the main character:

Now, mind you, the rest of the cast is really nice-looking, but they're not so over the top that I couldn't find people like them. The main guy...not hot. In fact, he looks a little bit sketchy, which I think works for his character.

I've noticed that the less likely I am to find a group of normal people who look remotely like the characters, the less likely I am to suspend disbelief and get into the show. Maybe I'm too skeptical, but I have a hard time believing that the entire law enforcement department of California, Florida, or Las Vegas are flawless people with great hair, make-up and wardrobes.

And if they are, and they do, sign me up. I could use a little of that as of late.

  1. I enjoyed that post...so true. It actually made me think of soap operas...so lame. The acting, the script and it’s all just annoyingly unreal. They are so poorly done which is why I could care less to watch them....but everyone looks perfect--perfect hair, make up, and body. But sorry guys, none of you can act if your life depended on it--such a waste of time.
