Closet Orphan

When I was a junior in High School, I found a green dress. Green happened (and happens) to be my favorite color, and so the fact that it was a size or two too large, and oddly shaped didn't matter. I bought it (on clearance) with my own money (hard earned from after school day-care), and treasured it's peasant-y appearance.

Well, a few years later, I came to my senses, and realized that the dress was actually kind of ugly. It's cut diagonally to the stretch of the fabric, so the thing pulled oddly, and then there was a tie around the neck and the sleeves were kind of puffed...it just wasn't working. Somehow though, I just couldn't let the thing go. I'd bought it with my own money, and it was green! It sat around in my closet, where I'd try to pull it out a few Sundays a year to see if it had somehow gotten better looking...it hadn't.

Fast forward about 7 years. I start learning how to refashion clothes, or at least getting enough practice so that they don't look worse than when I started. I cut the top off the dress and make it into a skirt. However, I cut the skirt too long and it hit me in a really unflattering fashion, so it sat in the closet, and then in the Goodwill bag for many months.* About a week ago, I decided to save this scrappy comeback-kid closet orphan, and see if it could gain new life.

It still pulls oddly diagonally, but with the new length, I think it works pretty well. I think it's saved itself from a trip to Goodwill for now...
Shirt: Shade, Undershirt: Shade, Shoes: Crocs, Belt: (voluntarily belted!) thrifted, Skirt: Walmart, refashioned to save its poor little life.

Sadly, this was the best picture out of the bunch...I think I was finishing a delicious coconut M&M, and when you're on vacation, there's just no time for silly things like re-takes.

*Does anyone else do this? You create a bag of Goodwill stuff, only to later go through it after seeing some project someone else did? This happens to me all the time. Usually I figure, "Well...if I totally mess up, I was going to get rid of it anyway...right?"

  1. Man, I need to get myself a sewing machine. I'm sure there is more that I could be doing with my "to donate" bag!

Way to voluntarily belt! I think it really pulls the outfit together.
